Baseball Takes Doubleheader From Alfred State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FROSTPROOF, Fla. – The University of Maine at Farmington baseball club (3-0) swept Saturday's doubleheader against non-conference opponent Alfred State with a, 14-8, and a, 9-8, victory in the RussMatt Invitational.

In game one, a total of 10 runs were scored in the first inning. Alfred State put up four runs in the opening frame with an RBI single and three-run home run.

In the bottom of the first, Tom Grady walked with the bases loaded to get the Beavers on the board. After Grayson Beressi singled home a run, Ethan Gouin followed with a two-run double. UMF had taken over after one inning, 6-4.

The Beavers added to their lead in the third inning with three more runs. Grady found the gap in left center field to bring Dustin McCrossin and Sean Cabaniss home. Beressi hit a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Ben Keene from third.

Beressi hit 3-for-4 in the first game with five runs batted in. Jordan Croteau and Grady also had strong games at the plate with three RBI's apiece.

Jimmy Neal earned the win on the mound for UMF. Neal gave up four hits and struck out three batters in four innings on the hill.

In part two of the double header, UMF played the role of comeback kids after trailing for most of the game.

With UMF behind, 7-3, in the top of the sixth inning, the Beavers rallied for four runs. The one-out rally started with back-to-back singles by Cabaniss and Keene, and then Tyler Flayhan doubled to left field. Beressi cleared the bases with a two-run triple that gave UMF a one-run lead.

Alfred State tied the game in the bottom of the six with a solo home run by Cullen Franz.

Farmington took the lead for good in the last inning. Nick Attaliades-Ryan walked and advanced to third on a throwing error by ASC's shortstop. Cabaniss laid down a bunt and beat out the throw, and then Attaliades-Ryan advanced on the throw for the game-winning run.

By rule, Ethan Nash earned the win because he was the last pitcher on the mound for the Beavers before the team took the lead. Mark Leahy came on the hill to shut the door in the bottom of the frame and secured the win

Cabaniss had a perfect afternoon at the plate in the second game with a 4-for-4 day and a team-best three runs batted in.

UMaine-Farmington faces its first North Atlantic Conference opponent on Sunday. The Beavers play a doubleheader against Colby-Sawyer at 2:30 p.m. in the RussMatt Invitational.
