Baseball Falls at Hands of Colby in Non-Conference Action

Box Score

LEWISTON, Maine – Sophomore Dustin McCrossin scored a pair of runs on three hits as the University of Maine at Farmington baseball team (11-5, 4-4) fell, 8-5, in non-conference action to Colby College on Monday evening at Leahey Baseball Field.

With Colby leading, 1-0, the Beavers took advantage of Colby pitching blunders by tying the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the first on a pitching balk.

In the team's next at-bat, UMF gained the lead with a bases-loaded groundout by Jimmy Parks (Springvale, Maine) but Grayson Beressi (Falmouth, Maine) crossed the plate for the score.

Colby regained the lead in the six by playing small ball. With a runner in scoring position, Tim Corey (Framingham, Mass.) laid down a sacrifice bunt but a UMF error allowed the Mules to cross the plate. Colby added one more in the frame with a one-out RBI single.

The Mules extended their lead to, 5-2, with another pair of runs in the seventh inning on a RBI single and a sacrifice fly.

UMF answered back with a pair in the eighth inning. Sean Cabaniss (Vassalboro, Maine) ripped a leadoff double and Dustin McCrossin (Yarmouth, Maine) followed with a single of his own. Ben Keene (Livermore, Maine) reached on an error and Cabaniss came home for the Beavers' second run of the game. Beressi stepped up and slapped a single to plate McCrossin and edge UMF closer, 5-4.

Colby sealed the game with three runs in the top of the ninth with a double and two singles. UMF got a run back in the bottom of the frame with a McCrossin single but could not produce enough offense to extend the game.

Riley Chickering (Otisfield, Maine) started on the hill for the Beavers and struck out a pair in five innings. Brett Elliott (Danville, Vt.), Mark Leahy (Rochester, N.H), and Nick Cartmell (Freeport, Maine) came on to finish the game in relief.

UMaine-Farmington hosts Thomas on Wednesday with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
