Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FARMINGTON, Maine – After splitting a doubleheader to begin the season, the University of Maine at Farmington softball team (4-14) swept a doubleheader against the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday afternoon. The Beavers offense came alive in the first game and won, 8-0, and, 7-1, in the nightcap.

UMF tacked on three runs in the second inning on three hits while forcing the UMPI defense to commit and error. Alison Hamilton (Portsmouth, R.I) smacked an RBI single and then after Shelby Bryant (So. Portland, Maine) ripped a single of her own, Meryl Bond (Jefferson, Maine) drove both runners home with a two-run double that found the gap in right center.

Bryant and Bond teamed up again in the fourth as the Beavers added another three-spot on the scoreboard. Bryant hit an RBI single to center field and then moved into scoring position with a stolen base. Bond muscled her second double of the game and then Katie Clark (Westbrook, Maine) hit a single up the middle to plate Bond.

The Beavers ended the game in the sixth inning with a pair of RBI singles from Bryant and Clark.

Bryant had a strong game at the plate by hitting 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Bond followed up Bryant with two hits and drove in two more runs.

Courtney Fowler (Greensboro, N.C.) picked up the win with a complete game three-hitter and struck out six UMPI hitters.

The offense kept rolling in game two by charting a run in every inning except for the second. In the first inning, aggressive base running paid off for UMF as Bond scored on a wild pitch.

Natasha DeRoche (Peru, Maine) stepped up and slapped a single in the third inning to double the Beavers' lead.

After UMPI scored a run in the top of the fourth, Farmington answered back with a pair of RBI singles to center field by Hamilton and Clark.

In the fifth, Kennadi Grover (Cushing, Maine) bumped UMF's advantage to, 6-1, with an RBI single to left field and Clark tacked on the Beavers' final run in the sixth with an RBI groundout.

Emily Vitone (Westminster, Mass.) also pitched a complete game three-hitter with five strikeouts and allowed one run.

UMaine-Farmington hits the road on Sunday for a doubleheader at Bowdoin.
