Box Score FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington (4-0) field hockey team recorded its third shutout victory of the season with Sunday's, 5-0, non-conference win over Rivier University (1-5) at Prescott Field.
Mara Balboni (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) gave UMF an early 1-0 lead only five and half minutes into the game with her second goal of the season. Emmah Spahr (Winthrop, Maine/Winthrop) sent a pass through the Raiders defense and Balboni lined a shot into the back of the cage.
Coming out of halftime with the one-goal lead, Balboni added her second goal of the contest in the 48th minute. Sarita Crandall (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) passed to the left side of the circle where Balboni backhanded a shot that took one bounce and doubled the Beavers' lead.
Less than thirty seconds later, Spahr and Balboni teamed up again but this time the roles were reversed. Spahr scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season with Balboni recording her second assist of the year.
In the 53rd minute, Andrea Stemm (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) helped increase the UMF lead to 4-0 with Delainey Kein (Unity, Maine/Mt. View) assisting the goal. As Kein dribbled into the circle, the senior passed to Stemm standing in the front of the goal. With a quick trap, Stemm knocked her shot into the right side of the cage.
Susan Newkirk (Bethel, Maine/Telstar) charted the final goal of the game with six minutes left to go. Jenessa Talarico (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) passed through a wall of Rivier defenders but her pass deflected to Newkirk, who tapped in the score.
Patty Smith (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) and Alyssa Arsenault combined for the shutout, as the UMF defense did not surrender a shot on goal.
