Baseball Continues Hot Start with a DH Sweep Over D'Youville

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- University of Maine at Farmington baseball (6-2) won its fourth game in the RussMatt Invitational on Thursday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep over D'Youville College (0-9).  The offense came alive in game one with a 16-8 showing and had another productive game in the nightcap with a 9-1 victory.

The Beavers produced a run in every inning with the exception of the sixth inning in the first contest. Sean Cabaniss (Vassalboro, Maine/Erskine Academy) led off the game with triple to center field and Dustin McCrossin (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) drove him home with an RBI single on the next play.  After McCrossin advanced to second on a passed ball and to third on a  flyout, McCrossin came home to score after Tom Grady (Whitefield, Maine/Erskine Academy) reached on an error.

McCrossin came through with an RBI single in the second inning and then Grady scored in the third inning after the Beavers were aggressive with a first-and-third double steal.

Ben Keene (Livermore, Maine/Spruce Mountain) crushed an RBI triple in the top of the fourth, tying him with head coach Chris Bessey on the all-time career triples list with seven. 

UMF's big inning came in the top of the fifth with six runs on four hits. Jimmy Parks (Springvale, Maine/Sanford) knocked in a pair of runs with an RBI single. Parks finished the doubleheader 4-for-7 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI. 

The Beavers had five different hitters drive in a pair of runs in the contest.

Kyle Peterson (Bethel, Maine/Telstar) earned the win on the hill for UMF. Peterson pitched five innings and fanned three Spartans while surrendering three earned runs on seven hits.

UMF stunned D'Youville with eight runs in the top of the first inning to start game two. The Beavers came through with six hits, including a two-run triple from Grady and an RBI double from Grayson Beressi (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth). Parks added another RBI to his solid afternoon with a base hit and McCrossin slapped an RBI single later in the inning.

Riley Chickering (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford) picked up his first career win in a UMF uniform. The sophomore threw six innings and only gave up one earned run on five hits.

UMaine-Farmington is idle on Friday but wraps up its Florida trip on Saturday with in-state rival Saint Joseph's College.
