Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – University of Maine at Farmington softball (1-9) was very close to pulling out its first win of the Florida spring trip, but could not hold on in the late innings on Thursday afternoon at the PFX Invitational. The Beavers dropped the first contest, 12-2, to Oswego State (4-3) before falling to St. Lawrence (5-5) in the second game, 9-5.

UMF trailed 2-0 after the first two innings to Oswego State but answered in the top of the third inning by tying the game at 2-2. Alison Hamilton (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth) singled to get the rally started and then Ashley Gleason (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) crushed a double as Hamilton scored all the way from first. Two batters later, Kylie Cunningham (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) came through with a single up the middle and Gleason was able to trot home for the tying run.

In the bottom of the third, the Lakers scored six runs with three of them coming on the bat of Ashley Lyman with a homerun.

The Beavers mounted five runs in the first inning against St. Lawrence. Haley Felkel (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) started the offensive surge with an infield single and then UMF played small ball to load the bases with two bunt singles. Cunningham plated the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to left field.

UMF used three straight RBI singles from Margaret Fogarty (Auburn, Maine/St. Johnsbury Academy), Tasha DeRoche (Peru, Maine/Dirigo), and Moesha Harrington (Wilton, Maine/Mt. Blue) and padded the led to 5-0.

The Saints added a run in the top of the second inning by forcing a UMF error and managed to get the bases loaded, but the Beavers persevered and got out of the jam by only surrendering one run.

St. Lawrence took the lead in the late innings with a pair of two-out rallies. Kelsey Murphy hit an RBI single in the fourth innings and then the Saints added seven runs in the top of the sixth on six hits.

Cunningham combined to hit 5-for-6 in today's doubleheader with two RBI.

UMaine-Farmington wraps up its trip in Florida on Friday with showdowns against Millikin and Grinnell.
