Baseball Swept by Castleton in Sunday's Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CASTLETON, Vt. – University of Maine at Farmington baseball (8-8, 1-5) fell in Sunday's doubleheader at Castleton University (12-9, 6-2) with a pair of 6-2 North Atlantic Conference losses at Spartan Field.

In the first game, Castleton scored a pair of runs in each of the first two innings. The Beavers managed to trim the Spartans' lead in half in the top of the third inning. Mark Leahy (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding) started the inning off with a single to left center and then Sean Cabaniss (Vassalboro, Maine/Erskine Academy) followed two batters later with a two-run homer down the left field line.

The Spartans added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the final margin of victory.

In the second game, Castleton scored a run in the bottom of the second inning but UMF answered in the top of the fourth inning. Jimmy Neal (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) doubled down the right field line with two outs and then moved to third one batter later on a Spartans' error. Tom Grady (Whitefield, Maine/Erskine Academy) stepped up and lined an RBI single to right field.

Castleton came back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead. The Beavers drew the bases loaded in the top of the sixth and managed to plate a run when Neal scored on a passed ball. With two runners in scoring position, UMF could not find a clutch hit to tie the game and grounded out to end the inning.

The Spartans put the game out of reach with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth innings.

Grayson Beressi (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) and Grady were both 2-for-3 at the plate in the second game.

UMaine-Farmington takes a break from conference action and hosts UMaine-Presque Isle on Tuesday afternoon in the home opener at Hippach Field.
