Walker's 6-6 Day Helps Beavers Split with Bobcats

LEWISTON, Maine -- UMaine Farmington split a pair of games on Lafayette Street Field with Bates College Bobcats on Wednesday, winning game one 5-4 and falling in game two 8-5.

Game One: Maine-Farmington 5, Bates 4

The Beavers scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good, defeating the Bobcats 5-4 in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader.

Alyssa Dillan walked to begin the frame. Elizabeth Walker followed with a single and a Bobcat throwing error allowed Dillan to score on the play. Walker advanced to second on the throw and moved to third on a wild pitch. A Kylie Cunningham RBI grounder provided a key insurance run, putting the Beavers up 5-3.

The Bobcats rallied in the top of the seventh. Senior Maddie Inlow singled up the middle. Two outs later, sophomore Mimi Crowley singled to right, putting runners at the corners.

First-year India Woolmington followed with a single to right, cutting the Beaver lead to one.

But Maine-Farmington pitcher Anastasia Albright (2-6) was able to get the next batter out and the Beavers hung on for the win.

First-year Kirsten Pelletier pitched a complete game in the circle for the Bobcats. She tossed six innings, scattering seven hits and striking out four. Pelletier (4-6) allowed five runs but only two were earned.

The Bobcats grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first against Beaver starter Skyler Watson. Sophomore Andrea Russo bunted her way aboard to start the frame. She stole second and advanced to third on a ground out. Inlow drove Russo home with a sacrifice fly.

Maine-Farmington evened things up in the bottom of the second. Walker walked leading off the inning. The Beavers bunted her to second and she advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two away, Amber Grady reached on an infield single and Walker scored, tying the contest at one.

Both teams scored a pair of runs in the third inning.

The Beavers answered right away in the bottom of the third. Alison Hamilton reached on an infield single and Maine-Farmington bunted her to second. With two outs, Walker reached on an infield single. A Bates throwing error allowed Hamilton to score on the play and Walker advanced to second base.

Another Bobcat error put runners at the corners with two outs. Margaret Fogarty tied the game with a single through the right side. Pelletier struck out Erika Whitman to end the inning with the score knotted at three apiece.

Game Two: Bates 8, Maine-Farmington 5

Elizabeth Walker led the Beavers in hitting, going 4-4 with two doubles and a rocket homerun over the center field fence to go along with three RBI's. Alyssa Dillan notched an RBI as well after going 1-4.

Bates scored three in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take command in an 8-5 victory over the Beavers in game two.

Sophomore Sam Fellers tossed a complete game to pick up the win. She scattered seven hits, allowing five runs (four earned) and striking out a pair. 

Trailing 4-3 entering the top of the fourth, the Bobcats got a one-out single from Woolmington. Then with two away, Pelletier reached on an error. Russo took advantage of the opportunity by doubling home a run, tying the game at four. Panepinto delivered the go-ahead hit, a two-RBI double to put the Bobcats up 6-4.

With two away in the top of the fifth, Bates struck again. Woolmington singled and Fellers doubled her home. Pelletier doubled in Fellers and just like that Bates led 8-4.

Maine-Farmington failed to score in the fifth and the sixth. They got an unearned run in the seventh before Fellers got Margaret Fogarty to line out, ending the game.

The Beavers took an early 2-0 lead in game two.

Hamilton walked to lead off the bottom of the first. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and two outs later Walker homered to clear the bases.

Down two, Bates responded with three in the top of the third.

Pelletier singled to get things started. Russo followed with a single of her own and one out later Inlow tripled in a pair of runs. A Fitzgerald RBI grounder put the Bobcats up 3-2.

The Beavers answered with two in the bottom of the third. Mikayla Cameron singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Alyssa Dillan singled in Cameron and Walker doubled in Dillan.
