Beavers Fall in Season Opener to SUNY Cortland 5-2

NORTHAMPTON, MA-  University of Maine at Farmington (0-1) suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon with a 5-2 showing vs SUNY Cortland  (1-0) at Smith College as part of the Caryl Newhof Classic.

Hannah Burchell gave Cortland a 1-0 lead 17 minutes into the game.  Jenessa Talarico tied the score just two minutes later before Anna Branch gave the Red Dragons the lead back for good 3:14 before the end of the first half. 

Branch pushed the lead to 3-1 2:29 into the second half, and Jess Gibaldi and Liz Athing followed with goals at 50:39 and 57:51, respectively, for a 5-1 Red Dragon lead. Kyla Sturtevant closed the scoring with 2:34 remaining in regulation for the 5-2 final.

Alyssa Arsenault started in goal and made three saves in 35 minutes, and Haley Frizzle also stopped three shots in 35 minutes of action. 

UMaine-Farmington will face Plymouth St. in the consolation game at 10:30 am on Sunday.  Cortland will face host Smith College in the Championship game at 1:30 pm.
