Box Score NORTHAMPTON, MA- University of Maine at Farmington (0-2) field hockey team dropped its second consecutive game to start the 2017 season, a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Plymouth State University (1-1) in the consolation game of the Caryl Neuhof Classic. The game was played at Smith College on Sunday afternoon.
Maddie Kabasakalian got Plymouth State on the board first when she took a feed from freshman Haley Wakefield and scored just over 14 minutes into the game. Katie Martin doubled the lead in the 28th minute on an unassisted strike and the Panthers would take the 2-0 lead into halftime.
Emma Martineau cut the lead to 2-1 less than three minutes into the second half, but the Panther offense kept up the pressure. The Panthers had four shots and forced three penalty corners over the next seven minutes with sophomore Kate McPherson finally breaking through with a goal after an assist from classmate Keeley Bartolini.
Martin and Kabasakalian both added unassisted goals over a six-minute span to increase the advantage to 5-1.
Plymouth St out-shot UMF 26-13 and also held the advantage in penalty corners 14-4.
Senior Forward Jenessa Talarico was named to the All-Tournament team for the Beavers.
UMaine-Farmington returns to action on Saturday traveling to Wellesley for a non-conference contest.
