GORHAM, Maine – A wild final 10 minutes of regulation ended with the University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team coming up short against in-state rival Southern Maine in a 2-1 loss to the Huskies, Thursday evening at Hannaford Field.

Trailing 1-0 heading into the fourth quarter, senior Alex Bessey knotted the game at 1-1 with 9:19 remaining with her unassisted goal. Bessey carried the ball the length of the field, beating Southern Maine goalie Julianna Kiklis for the score.

However, the deadlock between the Beavers and the Huskies lasted barely five minutes. Southern Maine's Chloe Arsenault struck with the game-winning goal at the 4:35 mark on the game clock, off an assist from Abigail Chartier.

Southern Maine picked up its first goal with 3:04 to play in the third quarter from Sage Drinkwater, with assists from Adelle Surette and Mary Keef. Neither team was able to put the ball in the back of the cage over the first two quarters of play, with UMaine-Farmington outshooting Southern Maine, 5-4, over the first 30 minutes.

Alicia Bridges played all 60 minutes in goal for the Beavers, charting six saves. Kiklis finished with two saves in the Huskies' goal. Southern Maine outshot UMF, 18-6, over all 60 minutes, including a 10-0 margin in the third quarter. The Huskies also received 14 penalty corners to the Beavers' four.

UMaine-Farmington closes out the 2021 regular season with four New England Collegiate Conference games, starting with a neutral site game with Manhattanville College on Sunday, Oct. 17, at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire.
