Box Score HENNIKER, New Hampshire – First year Ginny Twitchell netted what proved to be the game winner late in the second quarter, complementing a pair of goals from senior Alex Bessey, as the University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team downed Manhattanville College, 3-1, in a New England Collegiate Conference matchup on Sunday at New England College's Don Melander Field.
UMaine-Farmington improved to 3-2 in the NECC, 6-6 overall, with the conference victory.
Junior Jade Petrie fed Bessey for the Beavers' first goal of the game, which came just 53 seconds into the contest.
The Beavers doubled their lead to 2-0 with 4:41 remaining in the second quarter on Twitchell's unassisted goal, which came despite Manhattanville holding an 8-6 advantage in total shots over the opening two quarters.
Manhattanville finally got on the scoreboard with 32 seconds left to play in the third quarter on a goal by Kate Buckley, cutting the margin to 2-1 in UMF's favor.
Bessey picked up her second score of the day with 4:36 showing on the game clock, with senior Gracie Foss earning the assist.
Alicia Bridges made her third straight start in the UMaine-Farmington goal and registered three saves on her way to the victory. Manhattanville goalie Florence Harrison charted 11 saves. The Beavers outshot the Valiants, 20-14, including a 10-2 shot advantage in the fourth quarter. The Beavers held an 11-6 edge in penalty corners.
UMaine-Farmington closes out the home portion of its 2021 slate on Tuesday, Oct. 19, when the Beavers host Husson at 3:30 p.m. on Prescott Field.
