Field hockey stopped by Thomas in conference opener

FARMINGTON, Maine – A four-goal flurry in the second quarter by visiting Thomas College propelled the Terriers past the University of Maine at Farmington field hockey squad, 4-0, in both squads' New England Collegiate Conference opener on Saturday afternoon at Prescott Field.

UMaine-Farmington started the game with an early surge of momentum, at one point recording four penalty corner opportunities over a two-minute span. Ginny Twitchell charted the Beavers' lone shot during the sequence, with Terrier goalie Brennan Pinto making the stop.

After a scoreless opening quarter, Thomas' Julia Reny struck just 1:55 into the second stanza to put the Terriers on the scoreboard. Britney Gregoire extended Thomas' lead to 2-0 with 9:40 remaining in the second quarter, and added her second goal of the game with 7:19 to play in the quarter to put Thomas up 3-0.

Dezarae Parkhurst capped the scoring off an assist from Gregoire with 40 seconds showing on second quarter game clock, sending the Terriers into the halftime intermission with a 4-0 advantage.

Neither team was able to find the back of the cage over the final two quarters of play.

Thomas outshot UMaine-Farmington, 7-4, and a 16-12 advantage in penalty corners. Katelyn Rouleau got the start in the Beavers' goal and finished with two saves over the first two quarters. Grace DiMarco come on to play the third and fourth quarters in the UMF goal and was unchallenged over 30 minutes.

Pinto tallied two saves in the Thomas goal.

UMaine-Farmington returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 22, when they face Saint Joseph's College of Maine in a road contest. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
