Box Score 2 WATERVILLE, Maine -- The University of Maine at Farmington softball team ran headlong into a Colby College squad that boasts one of the better Division III pitching staffs in the nation, and were felled by the Mules in a pair of games on Tuesday afternoon at the Colby Softball Complex.
UMaine-Farmington dropped the first game, 6-0, before losing game two, 11-0, in five innings.
In game one, Colby starter Sam Ahlholm scattered three hits and struck out seven UMaine-Farmington batters in the win. The Mules took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and added two runs in both the third and fourth innings, while defensively allowing the Beavers to get a runner to second base just twice.
In game two, the Beavers faced Abby Orso, who began the day ranked 26th in Division III in strikeouts per seven innings with 10.2. Orso struck out 12 UMaine-Farmington batters and held the Beavers to one hit: a single by Kiley Merritt in the fourth inning.
UMaine-Farmington was still within striking distance midway through the fourth inning, trailing Colby by a 2-0 score. However, the Mules put up nine runs in the bottom of the fourth, bringing the game to an end after the UMF half of the fifth inning.
UMaine-Farmington softball makes its home debut on Wednesday, April 6, when it hosts Salem State (Mass.) in a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is slated for 2:00 p.m.
