Beavers Fall in Extra Innings in Game One, Game Two Called Due to Weather

Box Score 1

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The University of Maine at Farmington softball team was scheduled to play a doubleheader with games against the College of Mount Saint Vincent and Keystone College. The Beavers dropped game one against CMSV 4-3 and the 2nd game against Keystone was called due to weather after three innings.

Game One

The Beavers and Dolphins played a highly competitive, extra innings contest that the Dolphins ended up pulling out, walking it off in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The game was a pitcher's duel through the first four innings of the game. The Beavers recorded their 1st hit in top of the 4th inning when Megan Wilson (Belgrade, Maine) wrapped a single to center field. Christa Allen (Harrison, Maine) drew a one-out walk, but Dolphins pitcher Charlotte Kelly retired the next two hitters to work out of the jam.

The Beavers were able to crack the scoreboard in the top of the 5th inning. Olivia Paradis (Saco, Maine) led off the inning with a single and was bunted over to 2nd by Grace Martin (Marblehead, Mass.). Kiley Merritt (Lisbon Falls, Maine) roped a single to center to bring home Paradis and give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.

Carleigh Schievink (Charlestown, Mass.) worked out of a jam in the bottom of the 5th after allowing three consecutive singles to lead off the inning. She got Liana Cabeza to line out, Celine Vaughn to strikeout, and Nichole Reyes to pop out to end the threat.

In the top of the 6th inning, Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine) reached on an error to open the inning and moved up to 2nd on a single from Allen. Brianna Benson (Woodstock, Maine) pinch ran for Allen. Both Pike and Allen moved up to 2nd and 3rd on a wild pitch giving the Beavers 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Mackenzie Dyer (Gray, Maine) and Taylor Veilleux (Belgrade, Maine) were retired bringing Paradis to the plate with Pike and Allen still on 2nd and 3rd. Paradis hit a ball to left that was misplayed by the left fielder, allowing Pike and Allen to score and extend the lead to 3-0.

The Dolphins got two runs back in the bottom of the 6th. Jocelyn Vega ripped a one-out double and was then doubled home by Katie Hutter to make it 3-1. Sabrina Colon followed Hutter with a single to give the Dolphins 1st and 3rd with one out. The next batter was Serena Duran who singled home Hutter making it a 3-2 game.

The Beavers were held scoreless in the top of the 7th and held the 3-2 lead into the bottom of the 7th. Schievink retired the first two batters of the inning. Madyson Epps kept the Dolphins alive with a two-out single to left. Vega followed with a clutch triple, driving home Epps to tie the game. Schievink bared down and got Hutter to ground out to end the inning.

The Beavers were unable to score in the top of the eighth. With the runner being placed at 2nd base to start extra innings, Schievink got Colon to ground out to short for out number one, but Vega advanced to 3rd. Duran hit a grounder to Paradis at short who cut down Vega trying to score to keep the game tied. But with two outs, Shaniya Serrano singled to drive in Duran and win the game for the Dolphins.

Schievink finished the game having thrown 7.2 innings, scattering 12 hits and striking out seven. Merritt, Wilson, Allen and Paradis all had singles for the Beavers.

Game Two

The Beavers were holding on to a 5-4 lead after three innings when the game got called due to weather. Because four and a half innings were not completed, the game will not count towards the season records.
