FARMINGTON – Mollie Sweeney (South Hamilton, MA) converted a penalty stroke with 5:31 remaining in the second overtime to lift Gordon College field hockey to a 3-2 non-conference victory over the University of Maine at Farmington.
The loss spoiled the season opener for the host Beavers, who are scheduled to host Thomas on Wednesday. The Fighting Scots improved to 2-2.
Elyse Cole (Winthrop, ME) helped UMF to a 2-0 lead in the first half. Cole punched in a Kristin Chambers (Gorham, ME) feed just 59 seconds into the contest and knocked in an Andrea Tyler (Augusta, ME) offering with 23:21 left until intermission.
Gordon cut the deficit to 2-1 on a Kristen Helgesen (Manchester, MA) conversion of an Abigail Walker (Portland, ME) pass 1:53 into the second half, but the Beavers appeared to be holding on for the wind until a Sweeney smash with 41 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 2-2.
UMF received a pair of Chambers bids and two penalty corners in the first 7-on-7 extra session, but could not get on the board. Gordon fired off eight shots before Sweeney received and fired the penalty stroke just past the arm of netminder Kaeleigh Barker (Chicester, NH).
Barker finished with 19 saves in the loss.
Chyanne Wilson (Pearl River, NY) recorded 11 saves for the Fighting Scots.
