Box Score 2 VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --The University of Maine at Farmington softball team opened its season today at the Virginia Wesleyan College Beach Blast with a 3-2 loss to Virginia Intermont College in eight innings and a 13-4 loss to Randolph College in five innings.
The Beavers (0-2) are scheduled to be back in action Saturday at the VWC Beach Blast against Franklin & Marshall at 2 p.m. and host VWC at 4 p.m.
Against Virginia Intermont, the Cobras took advantage of Farmington miscues to score three unearned runs in the 3-2 eight-inning win.
Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chesterville, Maine) and Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, N.H.) each singled and doubled in the loss. Bartlett had an RBI as did Casey Mull on a groundout.
Emma Vaillancourt (Saco, Maine) walked six and struck out 13 in a complete-game loss for her UMF debut.
Against Randolph, the Wildcats rolled to a 13-4 win over the Beavers in five innings due to the mercy rule.
Amy Jones (Augusta, Maine) led Farmington with a single and a two-run homer, while Sam Morency (Lewiston, Maine) also clubbed a home run and Mitchell singled twice. McKell Barnes (Durham, Maine) plated the other Farmington run with a sacrifice fly.
Anna Piggott (Manchester, Conn.) was hit with the loss for the Beavers.
