Box Score 2 LEWISTON -- Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chesterville, Maine) crushed a grand-slam home run in the opener and tossed a shutout in the nightcap as the University of Maine at Farmington softball team swept Bates College 8-5, 3-0 in non-conference action today.
The Beavers (9-9) are scheduled to visit North Atlantic Conference rival Thomas College Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. for a doubleheader. The games were moved up a day due to Wednesday's impending rain. The Bobcats slipped to 5-9.
In the opener, Bartlett's blast in the first inning helped the Beavers roll out to a 6-0 lead en route to the 8-5 win.
Bartlett with five RBIs in the contest, while McKell Barnes (Durham, Maine) and Amy Jones (Augusta, Maine) each roped a pair of singles and Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, N.H.) doubled.
Emma Vaillancourt (Saco, Maine) went the distance for the win with seven hits allowed, six walks and two strikeouts.
Lauren Dobish and AnnaMarie Martino each singled and doubled for Bates with Martino plating three runs and Dobish one.
Kristen Finn took the loss, allowing nine hits with three walks and three punchouts.
In the second game, Bartlett scattered five hits with a walk and three strikeouts in the 3-0 victory.
Bartlett managed a 1-0 lead after Jones scored on an error in the first and gained breathing room in the seventh when Liz Sargent (Trenton, Maine) slammed a two-run blast for the 3-0 final.
Jones and Meaghan Donnell (Rochester, N.H.) each singled twice for UMF.
Caroline Gattuso gave up five hits in the loss with three bases on balls and four strikeouts.
