Beavers tumble at Thomas in softball

WATERVILLE -- The University of Maine at Farmington softball team was dealt a pair of North Atlantic Conference losses (6-5, 5-0) by Thomas College this afternoon.

The Beavers (9-11, 5-5) are scheduled to visit Colby College Thursday at 4 p.m. The Terriers ran their record to 17-9 overall and 11-1 in the NAC.

In the first game, the Beavers jumped out to an early four-run lead, but Thomas tied the game in the fifth and won on a Cassie Manning RBI triple in the seventh.

McKell Barnes (Durham, Maine), Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chesterville, Maine) and Samantha Morency (Lewiston, Maine) each smacked an RBI single and Meaghan Donnell (Rochester, N.H.) had a sacrifice fly as UMF opened the contest with a 4-0 advantage.

The Terriers answered back in the bottom of third when Lindsay Fry hit a RBI single to centerfield scoring Lauren Hachey. The Terriers pulled within one run when Samantha Moore hit a two run home run to right field to make it 4-3.

In the top of the fourth, the Beavers made it 5-3 when Liz Sargent scored on a throwing error by Thomas third basemen Ali Kriegel. The Terriers tied it up in the bottom of the fourth when pinch hitter Manning hit a two RBI single scoring Kriegel and Kaymala Eells to make 5-5.

The score remain tied, until the bottom of the seventh when Hachey doubled to centerfield, and the next at bat Manning hit a triple to drive in the game winning run.

The Terriers' Sara Pavento pitched the complete game allowing four earned runs, eight hits, while striking out two in the win.  The Terriers top hitters were Manning who went 2-2 with three RBIs and Moore who went 1-3 with a homerun and two RBIs.

Emma Vaillancourt (Saco, Maine) pitched six innings allowing six runs, eight hits, while striking out 3 in the loss. Bartlett collected a pair of hits for UMF.

In the second game, Jordan Kennedy pitched a complete-game shutout as Thomas won the nightcap 5-0.

Kennedy allowed five hits while striking out five batters in the win.

The Terriers scored first in the bottom of the fourth when Mallorie Blakney reached third base on a bunt after a throwing error by the Beavers third basemen.  Blakney scored on the next play when Moore single to centerfield. The Terriers  scored another run when Moore came home  on a wild pitch.  Hachey gave the Terriers a four run lead when she hit a two RBI double scoring Manning and Kimberly Grant.

Bartlett pitched six innings allowing four earn runs, five hits while striking out one in the loss.

The Beavers' best opportunity to score came at the start of the game as Amy Jones (Augusta, Maine), Barnes and Bartlett strung together a series of hits, but were unable to push across a run.
