Box Score 2 BANGOR -- Fifth-seeded University of Maine at Farmington was stunned by a seventh-inning rally by No. 1 Husson University 4-3, but ousted No. 3 Maine Maritime Academy 9-3 to stay alive in the North Atlantic Conference Softball Championship Round.
The Beavers (11-18) are scheduled to take the loser of No. 1 Husson/No. 2 Thomas on Saturday at Husson. Husson and Thomas were tied at 5-5 after eight innings before the game was called due to darkness. That game will be resumed at noon with UMF's contest to follow.
Against Maine Maritime, McKell Barnes (Durham, Maine) smacked an RBI double and a three-run home run to lead the Beavers to the 9-3 win.
The home run was Barnes' program-record 24th of her career. During the course of today's games, Barnes also established a school record with 144 career hits.
The Beavers got on the scoreboard first with an RBI double by Barnes. UMF tacked on three additional runs in the second inning, an inning that featured a triple to center field by Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine). The Mariners countered with two runs in the bottom of the third. UMF pulled away in the bottom of the sixth inning when Barnes hit a towering three run homerun to left-center field.
The Mariners fought back in the seventh with an RBI sacrifice fly by Leah Jackson but could not overcome the run deficit .
The Mariners were led by McKenzie Burke who hit 2-3 with one run scored and one RBI.
Barry finished with three hits for UMF, while Bridget Flaherty (Plymouth, Mass.) drove in two runs and the leftfielder helped out defensively by gunning down a runner at home plate.
Emma Vaillancourt (Saco, Maine) led the Beavers to victory with seven innings of work that featured eight strikeouts, seven hits, and three runs.
Against Husson, the Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to slip past the Beavers.
Lona Sargent singled to open the seventh and beat out a grounder by Sarah Risser to second base. After Kara Poirier sacrificed the runners up a base, Bri Webster squeezed in Sargent to tie the game at 3-3. Dottie Cameron laced a single to left field to plate Risser with the game-winning run as Husson dispatched the Beavers 4-3.
Sargent also clubbed a double for the Eagles, while Risser singled twice.
Kody Lyon collected the win for Husson. Lyon allowed three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts over 5.1 innings of relief.
Barnes singled, doubled and drove in a run for the Beavers, while Meaghan Donnell (Rochester, N.H.) singled twice. Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chesterville, Maine) and Amy Jones (Augusta, Maine) each knocked in a run in the loss.
Vaillancourt went the distance for UMF with six hits allowed and six strikeouts. Vaillancourt did not walked a batter.
The two teams exchanged runs over the first two innings to open up the contest with the 2-2 stalemate. The game remained locked at 2-2 until Barnes singled up the middle to score Jones for a 3-2 lead for the Beavers.
