Box Score 2 BANGOR -- The fifth-seeded University of Maine at Farmington's run in the North Atlantic Conference Softball Championship Round came to a close this afternoon as No. 1 Husson University shut out the Beavers 6-0 in the title game.
The Beavers, who have reached the NAC title game three out of the last four seasons, finished their season at 12-19. The Eagles (24-15) won their third straight NAC crown and earn the conference automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III Tournament.
UMF's McKell Barnes (Durham, Maine), Amy Jones (Augusta, Maine) and Emma Vaillancourt (Saco, Maine) were named to the NAC All-Tournament Team.
Husson's Dottie Cameron led the Eagles to victory, contributing five of Husson's six runs, and was named the tournament MVP.
Husson reached the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning when Kara Poirier hit an RBI single down the right field line that plated Sara Risser. Cameron led off the third inning for Husson with a homerun to left center field to lift the Eagles to a 2-0 lead over the Beavers. A sacrifice bunt by Bri Webster plated Sara Risser to push the Husson lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth.
Cameron made a diving shoestring catch in left field in the top of the sixth inning, hit a two RBI triple to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning and then scored on a passed ball to give the Eagles what would become their final lead at 6-0.
On the mound, Kody Lyon pitched a three- hit shutout for the Eagles, while recording one walk and five strikeouts.
Vaillancoiurt received the loss for UMF for her six innings of work that consisted of five strikeouts, six runs, and 10 hits.
Jones, Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chesterville, Maine) and Sam Morency (Lewiston, Maine) each recorded a hit for the Beavers.
Husson's Sarah Risser hit 2-3 with a double and three runs scored along with Poirier with a 2-3 effort and one run and RBI.
In order to reach the title game, the Beavers needed to defeat No. 2 Thoms College 8-6 earlier in the day.
UMF scored 7 runs in the first three innings, including a five-run second inning where they batted around to help propel the Beavers to the 8-6 victory.
The UMF offense was led by Bartlett who went 2-2 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored out of the cleanup spot, while Morency singled, doubled and drove in a run and Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine) singled twice. Barnes and Bridget Flaherty (Plymouth, Mass.) each clubbed a double
Bartlett started the game as the designated player, and then came in to pitch for the Beavers going 3.2 innings, allowing just one run on five hits with two strikeouts.
The Terriers tried to mount a comeback after their starter was chased from the game in the second inning by adding a three run third, but it wasn't enough to stop the potent Farmington offense. Samantha Moore (Etna, Maine) went 2-4 at the plate with an RBI and a pair of runs scored and Kelsey Crowe (Gorham, Maine) went 3-4 with a run scored as the #3 hitter, and also came in to pitch a scoreless seventh, striking out one of the four batters she faced.
