Box Score FARMINGTON, Maine – It's probably safe to say University of Maine at Farmington field hockey senior Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine/Hermon) enjoyed her team's "senior day".
Barry notched three goals to lead the Beavers to a 4-1 win over New England College, in a North Atlantic Conference matchup Sunday afternoon on Prescott Field.
Barry's hat trick helped lift UMaine-Farmington to a 7-7 overall record and a 7-2 conference mark, assuring the Beavers of a home game in the first round of next weekend's NAC Tournament. NEC fell to 8-10 overall, 6-3 in the NAC, but should also be in position to host a tournament quarterfinal.
Exact seedings, pairings, and game times for the NAC Tournament will be announced Tuesday night after the conclusion of all conference games.
UMaine-Farmington carried a 1-0 lead into the intermission on Barry's first goal of the day – a shot from point-blank range to the right of Pilgrims goalie Courtney Duquette (Enfield, N.H./Mascoma Valley). Senior Annie Agnew (Guilford, Maine/Piscataquis Community) was credited with an assist on the goal, which came with 19:42 showing on the first half game clock.
The senior combo of Barry-from-Agnew was responsible also for UMF's second goal, and ultimately the game winner, at the 27:27 mark of the second half, when Barry knocked in a high pass from Agnew.
NEC's Jennifer Adams (Brimfield, Mass./Tantasqua) got the Pilgrims on the scoreboard and broke UMF's shutout bid just over five minutes later with 22:25 remaining, when she scored on a penalty corner off a feed from Kristen O'Connell (Melrose, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) .
Barry completed her hat trick with 13:42 left to play, finishing with a nifty shot to the far corner of the New England cage after a pass right across the goal mouth from Agnew. Emma Daniel (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) closed the book on the scoring with just 15 seconds remaining, scoring on a penalty stroke.
UMaine-Farmington outshot New England College, 22-5, with a 17-3 advantage in shots on goal. Beavers senior Felisha Taylor (Chelsea, Maine/Cony) got the start in the UMF cage and recorded one save, with Curran Brierley (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) coming on in the second half and also recording a single stop. Duquette, who entered the game ranked fifth in Division III with 13.63 saves per game, played all 70 minutes for the Pilgrims and she nearly met her season average with 13 stops against the Beavers.
The Beavers also held a commanding 15-7 advantage in penalty corner opportunities.
