LEWISTON, Maine - The University of Maine at Farmington women's track and field team placed eighth on Saturday afternoon at the Maine State Indoor Track and Field Championship hosted by Bates College. As a team, the Beavers totaled 10 points en route to their eighth-place finish.
Bowdoin College earned the team title with 220 points, edging Bates College, which placed second with 186.83 points.
Top Beaver Performances:
The Beavers were led by junior Lina Martinez Nocito (Mt. Vernon, Maine), who provisionally qualified for the NCAA New England Championship in the 1,000 meters after racing to a time of 3:11.83. Martinez Nocito finished third in the event, earning six points for the team.
In the mile, senior Eve Poteet (Fair Hill, Md.) clocked a time of 6:19.05 to finish 10th overall.
Farmington's 4x800-meter relay team — Heather Alexander (Orleans, Vt.), Alayna Marchessault (Thomaston, Maine), Martinez Nocito, and Poteet — posted a time of 11:45.54 to place seventh overall and earn two points.
Senior Erica Johnson (Nobleboro, Maine) had a strong day, placing seventh in the 60-meter hurdles, 12th in the 60 meters, and 12th in the pole vault. In the 60-meter hurdles, Johnson earned two points with a time of 10.11 seconds in the finals. She qualified sixth in the preliminary round with a time of 9.75 seconds. Johnson finished the 60 meters in 8.31 seconds and cleared 2.12 meters in the pole vault on her third attempt.
Sophomore Emma Syphers (Bangor, Maine) delivered strong performances in both the long jump and triple jump. Syphers placed 12th in the long jump with a best mark of 4.84 meters. She also finished 14th in the triple jump with a final attempt measuring 10.14 meters. First-year Jenney Lutz (Lebanon, N.H.) placed just behind Syphers in the triple jump, finishing 15th with a mark of 10.12 meters.
First-year thrower Natalie Simpson (Bucksport, Maine) placed 12th in the shot put with a top throw of 9.58 meters.

The Beavers will return to action next weekend with events scheduled for both Friday and Saturday. The squad will split competition, with some athletes heading to Boston University for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational and others traveling to Bowdoin to compete in the Lynn Ruddy Invitational.
