Fred graduated from Lawrence High School (Fairfield, ME) and attended Colby College for one year prior to serving in the U.S. Army from 1942-1946.  He then enrolled at Farmington State Teacher's College (F.S.T.C.), graduating in 1950. Fred played basketball during his four years at F.S.T.C. and was the school's first player to score over 1,000 points.  During his career, Fred was a principal, superintendent, athletics director, and coach at several schools, and was very active in youth sports programs and school athletics.
